Regarding First Communion;
I have been taking Erin to church every Sunday--she mainly plays around and asks when is it done but she sits....for the most part. During consecration, I've been trying to bring her attention to the alter just so she can acknowledge what's gong on. Some weeks it's a struggle but others aren't so bad! We recite the Our Father and Hail Mary together, I think it's mostly me but I hear some mumbling. Our DRE ordered us a workbook for children with learning disabilities on First Holy Communion-so we'll see where all of this gets us.

Kurt and I are not rushing First Communion for Erin but we understand the importance of this Sacrament. If it's not this year than maybe the next.

Facing the facts--

Erin isn't keeping up with her peers and I know that!
She learns on her own pace--sometimes a bit slow but it's getting there.
As of yesterday, I agreed to have Erin pulled out more often in her typical classes
and to be taught more "life skills" (I hate that term) in the MD unit.
She will still have homeroom/art/gym/music/
lunch/parties/field trips with typical class
but most of her day will be in the MD unit.
I'm not sure what I'm feeling about that.
She really gets the best of both worlds;
keeping in touch with typical students
and being able to learn at her own pace.
But, something down there (deep down) isn't settling right with me.
I can't pin-point what that feeling is---maybe it's the change?
Realistically, I know it's the best for Erin!!

Pulmonologist follow-up

Yesterday, Erin was scheduled for a follow-up with her Pulmonologist and he informed me that Erin sounds CLEAR!! YAY! I still hear a lot of phlegm in her throat but nothing is in her lungs.We talked about all of the medications and how I thought they worked--I didn't think anything worked except for Zithromax (not a breathing treatment but an oral antibiotic that helps treat pnuemonia).
.
We both agreed that Erin should be on Zithromax 3x's a week but he also thought that Erin should stay on Xopenex (one of the two breathing treatments)--UGH!
.
During the '50-questions-before-the-doctor-comes-in' the nurse asked if Erin started her menstrual cycle yet---WHAT!! She's 9 years old!! A bit early to be asking that question but made me think about what I was going to do when she did start--sigh--that's not going to be fun!!!

It make a person wonder what happens if a med is given
or stored wrong!
Erin has been on Levothyroxine--
(liquid form of the pill)
For years I stored Levothryroxine my window sill
to help remind my little brain that Erin needs to take it daily.
Apparently, when one sets a liquid med on the window sill
--sun exposed--
the potency changes.
Didn't know that!
About 3 months ago, the bottle indicated that it needed to be refrigerated.
So....what has been happening all those years when I kept it out...
on the window sill, not refrigerated!?!?!
.
Levothyroxine, a thyroid hormone, is used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Without this hormone, the body cannot function properly, resulting in: poor growth; slow speech; lack of energy; weight gain; hair loss; dry, thick skin; and increased sensitivity to cold. When taken correctly, levothyroxine reverses these symptoms.
Apparently, it wasn't taken correctly!!!

So, med #2--Prevacid--Erin's has been taking this (capsule form) for years.
This month, the bottle had a new caution sticker--

Years ago, Kurt and I chose to integrate Erin into the public school---knowing that the MD unit had more resource for Erin educationally but also knowing that the public school had more to offer socially!

This past year, Erin proved that we made the right decision!

Her friendships with her classmates are incredible!
.
I knew they (her classmates) would be teaching Erin new things but to hear how much SHE has taught her classmates is just awesome!
.
She has one particular friend who is so wonderful to Erin.
Their friendship is like no other!
Their bond is unique!
To watch them play is pretty amazing!
.
For how many times Kurt and I went back and forth about our decision on schooling Erin, seeing this friendship verifies our choice!

This past Sunday,

Kurt's side celebrated two birthdays.

--who is my favorite mother-in-law--

celebrated her 80th birthday!

And Erin celebrated her 9th,

which is next week!

Erin's two Aunts had gifts taken care of

but one gift still has me wondering about Erin.

Her Aunt knows that Erin LOVES her pom-poms

so, she bought Erin two more pom-poms.

'Erin is going to love them!!'

But, wouldn't you know it---

Erin still prefers her old, ratty, pom-pom instead.

Well, I guess it's good to have back up! :)

This morning a run to the hospital for a blood draw (routine draw for thyroid)

phlebotomist---so mom, where would be the best place for me to take blood.
me---well, Erin isn't very good at giving blood. You can find a good vein and once you stick her the vein disappears. Children's in Dayton found that her hand gives the best blood.
phlebotomist---This looks like a really good vein in her arm, I think I'm going to try this one.
me---it will disappear but if you think you can get it go ahead.
phlebotomist---(starts sticking and digging and trying to find and more searching...)
me---OK, I think it disappeared, could you try her hand now.
phlebotomist---well, would you like for me to try this tiny vein or would you like for me to call someone who has been doing this longer.
me---let's call someone else to try.
new phlebotomist---yep, this vein in her hand is small but it looks really good
(the first poke and it was done!!!)
.
A quick drive around the block we were visiting the pediatrician's....for Erin's flue shot.
Poor girl got stuck 3x's and handled it all pretty good--'no cry', Erin would repeat!

Follow-up Pulmonary appointment--

This morning, a trip to Dayton's Children was on our schedule. Just a simple follow-up from her pneumonia this past fall....that's what we thought anyway!

Erin has been coming down with a slight cold last week and we noticed that she had a bit more phlegm build up than usual. There were times where she started to cough so hard that she would simply spit up a good amount of phlegm. OK, seriously though, this is Erin. She just sounds junky! When she coughs nothing loosens, when she eats food builds up and makes it hard for her to breathe. Yeah, I know--that's a big deal but that's Erin! SERIOUSLY!!! (yes, I brought Erin to pediatrician many times because of this)
.
Anyway, doc came in, asked if anything was new. "No, not really. Erin is coming down with a cold...or something....so she sounds pretty junky." After a short time of listening to her, he said, "she sounds worse than she did when she had pneumonia." Right away called for an acapella (something new for us---it's a weird looking object that helps clear phlegm secretions by vibration--Erin breathes into it and it vibrates at the same time hoping to loosing phlegm). A few exercises of that with albuterol (breathing treatments) 2x's a day until our next visit in 3months!! If Erin isn't cleared--or better--in two weeks a new aerosol will be prescribed.

This junky crud in Erin's upper airways have been going on for years. I'm thankful he heard her and I'm thankful he's trying to help resolve this.
.
Before we left, he noted that if the phlegm isn't cleared soon that it could cause another pneumonia. We all know that we DON"T want that!!!!!

First Reconciliation--

This evening was to be Erin's First Reconciliation.

Kurt and I just didn't feel as though Erin was ready for such

an important step---not now, anyway.

We believe that Erin will be ready for First Holy Communion in May.

Sometime before then, we will definitely have her make her First Reconciliation.

Erin didn't seem as thrilled to stick around and play

After moving back to Ohio from Virginia, about 14 years ago this Christmas, I was determined to move back to our home town Sidney.

Home schooling took over lives and the years came and went quickly. With the birth of Erin, home schooling slowly disappeared and one by one the kids were put into public school. That's when I realized that Minster is where we were going to stay for a very, very long time.
.
Never knowing for sure why God brought us to Minster.
.
I am finally realizing why!!
.
It all has to do with ERIN!!
.
I am very impressed with how the students in Erin's class treat her! She has been given 2 gifts (pictures) from different classmates just this week. Everyone seems to be very protective of Erin. And the respect they give her is OUTSTANDING!!! The love they show bring tears to my eyes!
.
Erin has been stopping teachers in their tracks to wave and announce her presence! They all seem to be very curtious and respectful to her. Giving her hugs, high fives, knuckles, or even a simple pat on the back.
.
I couldn't have sent Erin to a better school even if I could have predicted the future and planned it myself!

The end of Down syndrome--REALLY?!?!?

I couldn't believe what I read--

Last month, San Diego-based Sequenom released a test that allows doctors to screen for the most prevalent type of Down syndrome with only a blood test from the mother. The screening is available in 20 cities and is expected to hit New York soon. Two other companies have plans to release similar tests next year.

“What you end up having is a world without people with Down syndrome,” says Paul Root Wolpe, director of the center for ethics at Emory University. “And the question becomes is that a good thing or bad thing?”

Seriously!! Down syndrome would be extinct?!?! That statement insults me (and many moms who chose to have their child with Down syndrome)! Just because you know your child has a chance of having DS doesn't mean that 100% of parents will abort their child!!

People with Down syndrome typically have an extra copy of one of their chromosomes, usually chromosome 21, ..........

Down syndrome is trisomy 21! That means 3 of the 21st chromosome. If your child is born with 3 of the 18th chromosome than your child has trisomyE or Edwards syndrome. 3 of the 15th chromosome is called Prader-Willi syndrome (my cousin had this). They are all very, very different!!!

Kitchen reno--

So, I've been trying to fix up my kitchen on a budget---I mean a tight budget!

Paint is cheap--easy!

Backsplash tiles, not so cheap!

I bought a nice octagon, quarter size, tiles from 'Overstock'

but ended up being too grey for the tan I want.

I thought I wanted tan color on the top cabinets

and darker color on bottom cabinets.

It took me about a month to realize

I hated the darker cabinets on the bottom--re-paint!

I tried a different kind of paint for my floor.

(remember the black and white floor)

Now the paint keeps chipping--re-paint with probably epoxy!

I have one wall with water damage from years ago

so I'll solve that yucky look by putting textured wall paper up

then painting it the color I want.

That takes time and I've NEVER wall papered before!

Still need to figure out what kind of back splash I want,

or should I say,

what kind of back splash will fit my budget!

I still don't have a kitchen ceiling.

That water damage from years ago destroyed our kitchen ceiling.

Actually, the 'rustic' look doesn't bother me
--I would rather get backsplash!

So, this is what I've been working on lately.

Should I say, stressing over lately!

It's a lot of work and time consuming!

But I know, one day, it will be finished!

Disney adventure--

Our bus trip left late Tuesday morning

which brought us to Orlando Florida

around 8am Wedneday morning

for a well needed buffet breakfast.

Yes, we scared many resturants during our trip!

187 band members and chaperones

filled 4 large tour buses.

Shortly after breakfast a trip to Hollywood studios was on the schedule.

Towards the evening we all met for Fantasmic light show.

That was very cool!!!

Thursday morning, the adventure continued with Magic Kingdom.

A picture with all three of my girls were far and few between.

Magic Kingdm was the reason for the trip to Disney.

Minster band did an awesome job marching in the parade!!

I was so proud of them all!

The group picture came out awesome!

Can't wait to get this blown up for my two band members.

Yes, princess visits was definitely on Megan's wish list!

I could tell Catherine was a bit excited as well but she didn't want to admit it!

We ended Magic Kingdom with fireworks.

We continued the next day

(I think it was Friday)

with Typhoon Lagoon water park.

Friday evening we also grabbed dinner at Hard Rock Cafe

then watched the Blue Man Group---they were cool!!

Saturday, we stopped at Animal Kingdom for a few hours

then headed for EPCOT.

Spontanous stops at other characters added to the excitement!

Finally, some time with all three of my girls!

We ate dinner together then goofed off on a few rides.

We ended Thursday evening at EPCOT with the laser show

then on the bus for our long trip home!

The journey ended on Sunday evening

with a late mass at St. Augustine--

thank you, Father Rick!!!

I enjoyed the time spent with my three older girls

but definitely missed the three younger ones as well!

(can't forget about Derek)

Erin kept asking---Me come!

So, if everything works out,

another chaperone trip will be a must

in 4 years when Catherine's class goes.

Hopefully, taking the three younger and Kurt!

Medicaid Would Pay $16K to Kill Down Syndrome Baby

The pro-life group Operation Rescue has released a second undercover call it recorded exposing how abortion businesses are using money from Medicaid to pay for late-term abortions.

The first call showed how the Southwestern Women’s Options abortion center in Albuquerque, New Mexico offered information on how Medicaid would cover the $9,000 cost of a late-term abortion. This second call has the same abortion business telling a caller Medicaid would cover the estimated cost of $10,000-$16,000 for an abortion at 30 weeks gestation on an unborn baby diagnosed with Down Syndrome.

“We know that 92 percent of all women who receive a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome end up aborting their babies. Now we know that it is done at great expense to the taxpayer, who foots the bill for outrageously expensive abortions,” he said. “These precious babies do not deserve to die and certainly the taxpayers should not be paying to kill them. The fact that our tax money goes to exterminate innocent children with disabilities is abhorrent to most Americans. Cutting off the tax funding will go a long way toward ending this barbaric and intolerant practice.”

“Medicaid is a joint government program that is funded completely by tax dollars. Up to fifty percent of the money comes from state taxes and the rest comes from the Federal tax coffers, depending on the state’s poverty level,” Newman explained. “Federal Medicaid funds are not supposed to cover abortions, but do so in the cases of rape, incest, and the life of the mother, exceptions that have been exploited in the past to include more abortions. But it is State money that generally funds abortions to the tune of millions of dollars annually.”

Nothing too exciting at all!

Yup, I got the kids dressed about 15min before heading out.....

and it shows!!
(I think Erin still has some residue from dinner on her face)

Yes, they all had a great time!

I got to catch up with my sister-in-law while

kids ran from one house to another (Michael in the stroller)

and enough candy that should last for weeks

but we'll be happy if it lasts for the weekend!

The last few minutes of the evening

a quick trip to a neighboring town was in the plans.

Erin just had to stop in to say 'HI' to her aide from school.

I think that was the highlight of Erin's day!!!

Spiritual adoption--

For a few years now, I've been having this urge to adopt. Not just any child but a child with Down syndrome.
.
This past week, I've been checking out 'Reece's Rainbow' and all of the children they have up for adoption. While reading a child's story a heavy weight would come over me and I would get very emotional.
.
Well, the other night while at holy hour, a sense of peace came over me knowing that I needed to 'spiritually adopt' a child. I will pray for this child to find a home and donate when I can to this child so finding a home can be a bit easier. (adoption isn't cheap!)
.
I am posting a picture of my little saint that I have spiritually adopted and I hope that you will also pray for her as she sits and waits for loving parents to take her home!!!

Teen for Life Memorial-

This is the 'Teen for Life' 5 annual Pro-Life Pumpkin Memorial.

But, this isn't a one day memorial,

this is a memorial that lasts for the entire month of October.

That's the reason for ALL of Erin's medical issues.

No, the medical issues are not due to her extra chromosome!

Let me correct myself.
There are medical problems that are associated with Down syndrome;
heart defect
thyroid problem
gastrointestinal---(EA/TEF is under this area)
dry skin problem
respiratory infections
orthopedic problems
vision problem
hearing problems
.
and even then, I can count on one hand
(researching the internet)
how many newborns were born with
Down syndrome and EA/TEF

Anyway, I couldn't sleep the other night

so I researched a bit more about EA/TEF.
(You think after 8 years I would have researched enough)

I even joined a group on facebook

(I know, there's a group for that on facebook!

I was surprised too!)

Not sure what I was expecting, joining that group,

but I'll tell ya, Erin is a very lucky little girl!!!!

Many kids (typical kids) have feeding tubes or are consistently sick.

Many have had continuous problems with dilation procedures

(also known as Endoscopy).

Erin had many dilations but never had a problem!

Thank God!!!

Well, I guess you could say that joining this group

made me realize how lucky we have been

due to Erin's EA/TEF correction!
OK, so the first 3 years sucked--
In and out of Children's for dilation, pneumonia, croup
A few 911 calls due to Erin not breathing....
but, thankfully, nothing too serious that couldn't be fixed!

Thank you, Lord!!!

This past Saturday, we needed to pick up a few things from a department store. Thought Erin would have fun so we threw shoes on her and off we went. Keeping an eye on Erin she wondered over to the beds, jumped on them, then went through a few isles. After she didn't come back I knew that I had lost her--UGH!! I walked up and down looking for her then to the service desk I went. 'I officially lost my little girl.' After the manager checked the manual to make sure what code it was he quickly announced "CODE YELLOW". Instantly, 6 employees appeared out of nowhere--WOW! They gathered around me and I briefly said, 'my little girl is 8years old, she has Down syndrome, and is wearing a Minster coat.' As quick as they came, they all left. Within minutes, an employee came over to me and asked if my husband was with us, 'yes'. She informed me that he had found her in the toy isle towards the back of the store---why didn't I look there??? (SIGH)

Every evening as we sit down to dinner (usually without our 17year old due to football), the girls quickly start in with 'Bless us our Lord...' hoping that we (Kurt and I who are getting old and forgetful) forget to pray the Angelus. Sometimes, we give a glare then continue but there are many nights that we are able to say the Angelus as a family of 8 (remember, Derek is at football). Those moments i will always cherish!! Yes, our dinners can be just as crazy as yours; A 17month old that would rather sit in your lap than in his highchair, a 3 year old that cries about anything that's on her plate, Erin, who just wants to play and sing with her pom-poms, and the teens (with one preteen) who belches, laughs, argues....usually with food in their mouths. Our 17year old is able to join us during the weekends and his presence is just as enjoyable! I know, when Kurt and I are empty nesters (yes, I dream about that often) I will miss our family dinners but during those crazy moments I can't help but grin (yelling doesn't help, I've tried). Once dinner is finished everyone seems to go back to what they were doing (I'm usually running off to work). But they don't always run their separate ways. Many nights, 2-3 kids run upstairs to big brothers bedroom to finish an Xbox game. Often, after coming home from work, all 4 of the older kids are sitting up there laughing at whatever game they are playing TOGETHER!! I was never really big on those console video games but I just love watching our older kids play together.....without fighting---that's PRICELESS!!

Every Friday, Erin get's to 'cash out' her pennies for a small gift in the MD classroom. Today, Erin purchased a headband (I believe that's were she got it from). Anyway, that little girls hasn't taken her headband off yet! She is so darn proud of herself!

Your Baby Can Read--

Yes, Erin, Jamie, and I still lay in bed and review 'Your Baby Can Read' sight words. Jamie isn't paying much attention to the words but Erin is slowly catching on to the letters and sounds. She came up with the word 'chimpanzee' without any ques from me this evening! YAY, Erin!! There are words like 'dog' 'cat' 'tiger'...that Erin just knows but I do notice other words coming quicker to her.

Would I suggest purchasing 'Your Baby Can Read' to others?
Sure, they are nice words with slide out pictures but they will only benefit your child if you sit down with them for about 10min everyday to review the words. Even though there are 5 different levels, I don't wait till Erin knows each word perfectly to add the next level. Right now, we review the first 3 levels, 10 words in each level. There are also a DVDs--very colorful and interactive--but Jamie nor Erin enjoys watching them. If we did exactly what the box suggests (one level at a time with DVD) we would see a quicker improvement. But, how we do it works for us. And yes, I will continue to review these words with Jamie and Erin as our nightly routine--I enjoy it and I know they enjoy it, too!!

This year, we took a drive to the Shelby County Fairground

and enjoyed the fall festival.

We had a lot of fun!

Games and prizes for the young.

Art and crafts for all.
We even enjoyed a nice hayride!

Food was sold at the bare minimum

and what a beautiful day for it!!

October 7, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - I’ve been putting off getting my hair done for a while because it’s hard for me to rationalize spending the moneyand spending 2 hours being still. (I know, first world problem!) But, alas, my roots were quite blond so I scheduled an appointment for today. I’ve been battling the blues for a few days and would probably have stayed in bed had it not been for the appointment.

I walked in and took a seat while I waited for my stylist to come get me. I can’t even make up what happened next.

On the other side of the wall, I heard this conversation:

Girl #1: “Well, I’ve always been pro-choice, especially if there’s something wrong.”

(I look around for candid camera.)

Girl#2: “Yeah I’ve been sick for a month. I just don’t think I can do this if there’s something wrong with the baby.”

(After I get over my shock, I begin to pray. I thought I was here to get my hair colored, but apparently You have other plans, Jesus.)

Girl #1: “I think you did the right thing by making the appointment. It’s harder to talk yourself out of it once you have a time to get it done. Will your husband drive you?”

(HUSBAND??)

Girl #2: “No, he doesn’t know I’ve been thinking about abortion. I think I will just tell him I had a miscarriage.”

(Here we go!)

As I round the corner with my “Pray to end abortion” t-shirt and my LIFE band, I felt the Holy Spirit say, “meekness and kindness, Kelly”, and I thanked Him for the reminder.

Me: “I couldn’t help but overhear what you guys were talking about and I’ve never felt stronger in my life that I was put in this room by God.”

(Their mouths drop open, and they just stare at me. I take a deep breath.)

Me: “I don’t know if you know God, but He knows your baby. He already has his or her life planned out. He gave you that baby and believed that life would be safe in your womb. PLEASE don’t do what I did many years ago. Please don’t kill your baby.”
(30 seconds of silence ensued that felt like an hour…and then they both start to cry.)

Girl #2: “But they think my baby has Down Syndrome. I don’t know how to care for a retarded child.”

Me: “Your child isn’t retarded. Your child may have special needs that will be a challenge. But the joy that child will bring you will overshadow EVERYTHING else.”

(I had Mattie Loux, a Down syndrome child who was adopted by a friend of mine and whojust came home after spending his first year in the hospital, fresh in my mind. The Louxs have seven children, four of whom are adopted, and two who have Down syndrome. So I took out my phone and started to show her pictures of Mattie.)

Me: “Look at that baby’s smile. He has so much love. If you don’t think you can provide that, please don’t take your baby’s life away. Let someone else love him/her. I would love your baby like my own.”

(She begins to weep and takes my hand.)

Girl #2: “He’s mine. I know he’s mine. I can’t do it. God will help me.”

(I cried and prayed with her.)

I sat for the 2 hours with a grateful heart and didn’t mind it much.

Before Girl #2 left the salon, she came over to thank me and said she was a walk-in. She doesn’t even get her hair cut there.

Honestly, I was terrified to stand up and say something. My heart was almost beating out of my chest, but I did it anyway….and I think me and Jesus (and Mattie) may have saved a baby today.

Erin received a clean bill of health at Children's this morning!! YAY! PICC line in OUT! She has a nasty rash due to being allergic to penicillin (didn't know till last night) and a bedroom that has a nasty penicillin stench but otherwise she is doing great.

Walgreens-Optioncare has been delivering Erin's
penicillin to our house twice this week.

This Walgreens isn't your typical Walgreens.

It specializes in IV treatments (chemo and such)

The delivery man says that he can drive anywhere
from 400-500 miles per day.
They are located in the Dayton area and
will drive anywhere from Cincinnati to Columbus
and even to Indiana. WOW!

Can't imagine what our Walgreens bill is going to look like!

Thank you Lord for insurance--
knowing that we will be meeting our out of pocket deductible this year.

This past week of hospitals, tests, no sleep, homesickness....

Erin has been wonderful!

She never complained---

even after they poked her twice to find blood,

inserted an IV line, countless x-rays.

re-did her PICC line a few times....

There was always a smile on her face and a laugh for the nurses!

(which, I know, made their day as well)

Today has been a wonderful Monday! Erin's junky lungs are cleared, her diarrhea is slowly going away, yeast infection is looking better, no oxygen at night......now, to finish up with this PICC line and get rid of this thing (I'm tired waking 2x's at night)!! Pulmonary appointment on Thursday so let's pray for questions to be answered!

Many questions I have---

Pneumonia just isn't sitting right with me. There are just a few questions that cannot be answered---why doesn't Erin have a fever? Why didn't the first antibiotics work? Why didn't our pediatrician see it on the X-Ray (nor did the ER doctor)?

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia jumped out at me while searching the internet. BPD is a lung disease primarily in children who was intubated at new born also BPD seem to be very similar to asthma symptoms, x-ray would show a hazy film in both lungs---that's Erin. I don't know why I'm focused on BPD but I am.
.
I'm also focused on Cystic Fibrosis--they will be testing Erin for that today. Belly pain from severe constipation, Increased gas, bloating, or a belly that appears swollen (distended)--GI problems. Cystic Fibrosis could cause Pneumonia and breathing issues.
.
I did email our pediatrician about my thoughts---yes, I'm one of THOSE parents!!!

Now, my thoughts are on Erin--the picc line procedure should be over and recover is on its way. Wish I was there but I know I needed to be home for a few days (until Kurt gets tired of the hospital!) We'll be visiting her tomorrow!! LOVE YOU ERIN!

New diagnosis--

I could sit here for hours trying to figure out exactly how I should write this post but it's late and I'm tired so I'll just get to the details.

Monday morning Erin's pediatrician knew Erin wasn't getting any better so a transfer to Children's Medical in Dayton was needed. I cried a bit, then pulled myself together knowing that's what we had to do. JTDMH was good to Erin! She didn't want to leave! I made the hard decision to have Erin ride in the ambulance without me so I could go home and get clothes and school work for Erin to work on. It was a very hard decision but I had to have a car at Children's (and fresh clothes).

Just like the earlier posts, Erin is doing just fine during the days---singing, playing and watching a lot of SpongeBob-- but the nights can get nasty! Because we are at Children's with Erin's Pulmonologist specialist he ordered another X-Ray and determined that Erin has double pneumonia. YUCK!! His next question, why?? Thinking maybe acid reflux had something to do with it. More tests will be preformed but after Erin gets better! She has been prescribed a 10day IV therapy of an antibiotic (can't think of it right now). No, that doesn't mean that we need to stay at Children's for 10 days. Tomorrow (I guess today, Wednesday) they will be putting a picc line in Erin's upper arm so when she's able to go home we can continue to administer her the antibiotics. WHEN she's able to go home.....that's the thousand dollar question!! I'm praying that it will only take a few days of the antibiotic to kick in and hopefully we'll see improvement!!

This evening I received a text that dad was going bonkers at home so I called him and he seemed pretty excited to switch places with me--the grass is always greener on the other side!

I had to capture Erin's bedroom on my cell phone--too funny!

So, it's late and I'm excited that I get to sleep in my own bed---I don't even think that I'm going to get pj's on! Wednesday morning brings me getting the kids off to school and taking my 16 year old (birthday was Monday and I was at the hospital--didn't like that at all) to get her license! YAY! No more driving to school to drop off/pick up kids for me!!!! Thursday, the two younger ones and I will take a drive to Dayton to check out Erin and see how dad is holding up---praying that I get good news!

Yup, we're not going anywhere anytime soon. Erin is being treated very well-like a princess! The first day she was excited to stay and watch tv in bed, now it's getting pretty old! Oxygen saturation level still goes down pretty low at night so extra help is needed(3lt of oxygen). Erin had a modified barrium swallow to make sure nothing is blocking her esophagus. Everything looked great there. Not sure what else the pediatricianhas up her sleeves but things are bound to get better........right?!?!

The doctor did call and just said that if Erin's O2 level doesn't improve by her 8am breathing treatment I am to call her hot line at home and she will prescribe another prescription. PHEW! No hospital!

On the list of instructions from the pediatrician's office was to record Erin's saturation level before and after her breathing treatments. Yeah, I can do that!! Well, this morning I read the instructions a bit closer and read that if her saturation level goes below 93% that I am to contact the doctor! UGH!! Struggling, I finally called her and left a message on her hot line at home.
'Erin's pattern seems to be consistent. Her saturation level starts at 91% before her breathing treatment then increases to 93% after her breathing treatment.' Every time the phone rings, I gasp hoping it's not her calling me back!

I'll do what's best for Erin but we are a busy family and just the thought of being in the hospital for a week just makes me want to cry! Kurt doesn't have anymore vacation days left until the end of this month, I work every evening, all kids need taxied around town for something or another....you've all been there and can totally understand my fear!

I will continue to do what I need (waking ever 4hrs for breathing treatments) praying that a hospital stay isn't how our weekend is going to end!! (SIGH)

ER follow-up--

Late morning, Erin had an appointment with her pediatrician. WOW! That didn't go the way I was expecting!! Apparently, if Erin would have seen her pediatrician on Tuesday Erin would have been admitted into the hospital. Guess I didn't know her junky chest was that serious (Erin seems to be always junky so I didn't think much of it)! X-Ray showed NOTHING, the ER doctor dismissed us just as confused as we were about what was wrong with Erin (I should add that the ER report said that Erin was dismissed with an oxygen saturation level of 87%, I wasn't aware that it was still that low).
Well, Erin cannot go back to school without the doctor permission (even though she's been going all week). She is to have breathing treatments every 4hrs (recording O2 level before and after treatments), Erin isn't just on Zithromax (which is fighting off any viral infection) but also on Orapred (steroid). On Monday, we are to see the doctor again and hopefully get some good news!!!

My feelings on this---FRUSTRATION!!!

I guess mostly about our ER visit! Knowing how serious it was, Erin should have been on O2 right when we entered those doors! She should have been given a steroid shot within hours and our pediatrician should have been called---especially if the doctor didn't know what was going on. I guess that I need to write down a check list of things I should ask while at the ER before leaving. UGH!!!

10pm last night I checked Erin's O2 while she was sleeping and it was already down to 87%. To the ER we went. Wouldn't you know it, every room but two were filled at the ER----this is going to be a long night! Three breathing treatments, a chest x-ray and prescription later we were finally home, 1:30am, and my bed never felt so good!!!

It's 3:20am and I was waken by Erin complaining of her stomach--'Ah, neutropenia strikes again'. After a dose of Tylenol (not sure why that takes care of Erin's neutropenia, but it does) up to bed she went. I sat there on the edge of her bed watching Erin wrestle around, but most of all, I was listening. Hmmm, didn't like the sounds she was making at all! I could see a lot of pulling in her chest while she breathed and I heard a lot of rattling so I encouraged Erin to cough. Coughing on demand seems to be a bit difficult for Erin. That's when she decides to take those short, little coughs--like that's going to do something.
After staring at Erin, watching her breathe, I finally searched for that Pulse Oximeter that we purchased during Erin's first year. UGH! Oxygen level 85% heart rate 118 (sigh). 'Ok, Erin, let's get up for a little bit'. To the bathroom we go, figure the moist air from the shower should do some good. Erin did throw a little up but breathing still seemed pretty labored (now up to 87%). I'm fighting with taking her to the ER--I hate the ER!! Which takes me to this post. I am waiting till Erin falls asleep so I can take her O2 level again while she's at rest, praying that might make a difference.
YAY! O2 at 90% and heart at 97! It's now 5:20 and I have to wake in an hour anyway so I'm going to keep an eye on Erin for the rest of the morning and see what 7:30am bring us! Thank you Lord!!

Morning drop off--

For the past week, Erin has had a friend waiting for her in the morning at the bike rack in front of school. This morning, her friend ran next to the van (safe zone of course) waving to Erin as we pulled up to the bike rack. The kids at school are so nice and generous to Erin! I love it!!!

Erin's MD teacher has sent words to Erin via email on web cam.
Erin loves it!!!!

We sat at the computer (one of Erin's favorite spots)
and watched her teacher holding up word cards.
Erin repeated each word with clear and distinctive pronunciation!

who has passed away 6 years ago.
Today, she would have been 22!

Well, my kids have been using the 'R' word a bit too much lately.

Durning dinner, my 15 year old said that such and such "was retarded"

(that was just 15min after my son used the R word)

I BLEW UP!!!

NO MORE "R" WORD IN THIS HOUSE!!!!!
